In November 2023, Captain of Diamond Beach Rural Fire Brigade Leo Fransen was fatally struck by a falling tree branch on a fireground in the state’s north west. Deployed as part of Mid Coast Strike Team Alpha, Captain Fransen and his crewmates had made the eight-hour journey to assist local crews keep the Hudson Fire within its containment lines. Without hesitation or regard for their own safety, members of the Strike Team immediately rushed to his aid. Their extraordinary efforts in perilous conditions gave Captain Fransen, their friend and crewmate, every chance at survival.
Held on the fourth of May, St Florian’s Day is the International Day of Firefighters. To mark the occasion each year, the RFS takes the opportunity to recognise its members’ acts of bravery and outstanding service. This year, more than 20 RFS volunteers, staff and NSW Ambulance Paramedics were recognised for their professionalism and care in responding to a fatal accident on one of our firegrounds.
