In 1998, large parts of Sudan experienced one of the worst humanitarian disasters in its modern history. Prolonged drought, ongoing conflict, and the collapse of local food systems combined to create a devastating famine that affected millions of people.

Entire communities were cut off from aid as fighting made roads unsafe and supply routes impossible to maintain. Crops failed, livestock died, and food prices rose beyond what ordinary families could afford. Many people were forced to leave their homes in search of food, safety, or assistance.

International aid agencies warned that delays in relief efforts and political obstacles significantly worsened the crisis. By the time large-scale assistance arrived, countless lives had already been lost, and the long-term effects on health, education, and stability were deeply felt across the region.

This video looks at what caused the 1998 Sudan famine, how it unfolded, and why it remains an important example of how conflict and environmental hardship can combine to create catastrophic human suffering.
