British public information films (PIFs) began in the 1940s, produced by the government to educate the public on safety, health, and civil defense. During World War II, they advised on air raids and rationing. In the postwar years, topics expanded to road safety, fire prevention, and hygiene. The Central Office of Information (COI), formed in 1946, became the main producer. PIFs gained notoriety in the 1970s and ’80s for their often dark, unsettling tone like the haunting "Apaches" (1977) and "Lonely Water" (1973). These films aimed to shock audiences into caution
