A significant chunk of Sonic the Hedgehog's history has been brushed aside simply as "the bad years," without much effort having gone into preserving the actual stories that led to Sonic's more controversial or perhaps disappointing titles: Games like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Heroes, and to many, even Sonic Adventure 2. Each of these Sonic games has a fascinating history that's been overshadowed by other discussions - each has its own story of crunch, of layoffs, of developers losing 20+ pounds trying to meet deadlines, of a Sega that was even closer to the brink than we ever remember.
