PCGS is the leading TPG (third-party-grader) for coins, and one of the oldest. They started slabbing coins in 1986, leaving a colorful history ( or coin lore) that can make collecting even more fun. While the old adage “buy the coin not the holder” still applies, you might want to fork over a few extra bucks if it means making multiples.

Many collectors looking at prices realized for superb gem coins are often baffled at why a coin sells for 5x what the grade below it sells for, especially when there is little difference. While everyone wants a coins that has the best quality (or tells a story for circulated coins), not everyone is willing to fork over the huge premiums when they can purchase a slightly worse coin for a fraction of the price. So, what’s the best grade in price vs quality? I think it comes down to personal preference and the design. I think how the coins was graded affects this as well. A coin with a grade bump for better-than-average toning really seems less than ideal than a technical grade, or even one market grades for overall quality. Which grades do you guys prefer?
