Bent's Old Fort is one of the most important and last established trading stations in the Rocky Mountains.
William and Charles Bent built the original fort in 1833 to trade with Native Americans and trappers. Primary trade was with the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes for buffalo robes.
The fort provided explorers, adventurers, and the U.S. Army a place to get needed supplies such as food, water and livestock. Disasters and disease caused abandonment in 1849.
The fort was an important point of commercial, social, military, and cultural contact between early american settlers, Native Americans, Hispanics, and other groups lining the border of United States Territory. The fort served as a point of exchange for trappers between the southern Rocky Mountains, Missouri, Mexico, and from the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Comanche, and Kiowa tribes.
Artifacts, sketches, paintings, and diaries from the original fort were used to replicate the rooms and decoration during a reconstruction project in 1976. The fort and the surrounding land allow people to step back in time to learn about the beauty and horror of the westward expansion in the United States....
