On June 5, 2012, a major milestone in modern maritime history was reached in Western Norway. After more than two years of construction inside a closed shipyard, Draken Harald Hårfagre, the world’s largest Viking ship built in modern times, was officially launched and named. Shortly after entering the water on June 13, 2012, the crew hoisted the ship’s massive 300-square-meter sail for the very first time. This footage captures the transition of the 35-meter-long ship from a shipyard construction project to a functional ocean-going vessel.
What this historic footage highlights:
The physical process of moving the massive clinker-built oak hull into its true element, the sea.
The official naming ceremony and initial moments of the hull meeting open water.
The crew is working together to hoist and test the handling of the 300-square-meter silk-and-wool square sail.
The beginning of the sea trials meant to test the superb seaworthiness described in the Old Norse sagas.
With the ship finally released from the shipyard, the time had come for the crew to learn the practical seamanship required to navigate this ancient dragon ship on the open ocean.
