Multi-level marketing companies, or MLMs, are once again making headlines, with influencers and reality TV stars promoting business opportunities online.

Marketing Lecturer Dr Máire O'Sullivan and former MLM earner and author Emily Lynn Paulson explain how MLMs work, who they're targeting, why so many people are drawn in, and how they differ from illegal pyramid schemes.

Emily also shares her own experience of joining an MLM as a stay-at-home mum, becoming one of the company's success stories, and the moment she realised the reality didn't match the dream being sold.
