The difference between a pipe lasting decades and a pipe lasting a century often comes down to what happens before it ever leaves the factory.
In this clip, Jeff Mason of U.S. Pipe explains why ductile iron pipe receives both an interior lining and exterior coating before being shipped to water utilities. A cement lining, used for more than 100 years, helps protect the iron, support water quality, and reduce the risk of tuberculation that can restrict flow inside a pipe.
The exterior receives a protective asphaltic coating designed to shield the pipe from the elements before installation. Together, these layers help prepare critical infrastructure for years of service beneath streets, neighborhoods, and communities.
