What did it actually mean to be a free person of color in North Carolina? In 1857, William Chavers found out the hard way when a simple act—carrying a shotgun—put him on trial. But this case wasn’t just about one man. It exposed the legal loopholes that controlled the lives of free Black and mixed-race people.
Laws said they were free. Society said otherwise. And in a single court ruling, race itself was put on trial.
