Despite the fire having nothing to do with his driving speed, Toyota denied his warranty claim based on data indicating he had driven over 85 mph at some point. This incident highlights a growing concern: car companies collecting and using your driving data against you.
In 2023, the Mozilla Foundation reviewed the privacy standards of 25 major car brands and found that every single one failed to meet consumer privacy standards. Companies like BMW, Ford, Toyota, Tesla, Kia, and Subaru collect deeply personal data, including your location, speed, facial expressions, and even more intimate details like sexual activity and health information.
But it gets worse. In March 2024, The New York Times revealed that car companies are selling this data to insurance companies. Imagine Ken Dal, a 65-year-old careful driver, who saw his insurance premiums skyrocket by 21% due to a bad report from a data broker called LexisNexis. This report included over 130 pages of detailed driving data from his car manufacturer, General Motors.
Ken's story is not unique. Many drivers are unaware that their data is being collected and sold. Some car companies have opt-in clauses hidden in the fine print, but many don't, leaving drivers in the dark. For sports car enthusiasts, it's a nightmare. One Corvette owner found his insurance score ruined after taking his car for a spin on a professional racetrack. Another Cadillac owner was denied insurance by seven companies, all because of his car's data report.
