Everyone has their personal preferences, and there so much variety and awe inspiring craftsmanship in history. But for me personally the Renaissance era is where the development of swords reached its peak. The Baroque and later time periods of course had their share of effective and beautifully made edged weapons. However I don't think they brought any fundamental improvements or innovations that hadn't already been done in some form.
In this video I'm taking you along to take a closer look at some of the astonishing work from the 15th to 17th century in museums that I would highly recommend: The Wallace Collection in London and the Royal Armouries in Leeds, as well as a few examples from the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

The longswords / hand-and-a-half swords (and even estocs) with complex hilts in particular are fantastic. There are also excellent basket-hilted swords or sabers, Dussack style shell guards, etc. Plenty to see and admire.
