An unexpected and emotional scene at the end of the first episode of The Handmaid's Tale in its sixth season. June is reunited with her mother Holly, after having been apart for many years.
The music which accompanied this scene, seemed to have been made for this moment. 'Ára Bátur' by Sigur Rós. I found a recording, made at Abbey Road Studios in 2008, with a 67-piece orchestra and the London Oratory Boys Choir.
I brought images from this studio recording together with the reunion scene. The reason for wanting to create this, was to show it to a classical music group which I organise weekly at the care home where I work. Among a selection of concert fragments from various composers, ballet scenes and opera, I also try to include motion picture scores, to show how music can complement the atmosphere and state of mind of the characters involved. I felt this was a very powerful example.
