A Lovely Jaunt | The Handmaid's Tale Ep 3: Power, Sexuality, and Boredom @ALovelyJaunt | Uploaded February 2018 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
VIDEO SUMMARY:

****VIEWER WARNING**** In this episode, I talk about sexuality and self-harm as they are dealt with in the novel. If you are sensitive to either of these issues or if you are young, consider skipping this video.

In this video I discuss the way power and sexuality interact. Mainly, throughout the novel it is clear that The Commander is mostly unaware of the way in which his power not only commands access to sex how he wants it but it even commands the pretense of complicity. We also take a look at how the epilogue contributes the novel's position on sexuality

We also take a look at Offred's boredom. We review a couple of key passages from the text and analyze the way in which the stream of conscious narration reinforces Offred's bored experience, which is due to the combination of her lack of power and her lack of full self expression.
