MoAn Inc. | The Hades & Persephone Retelling That SHOCKED Me ... (Promises And Pomegranates Book Review) @MoAnInc | Uploaded September 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
This book is not marketed as a retelling of Hades and Persephone - something I think is incredibly important to point out. But the comparison between the main couple (Kal & Elena) and the Ancient Greek rulers of the underworld is repeated multiple times throughout the book. Therefore, at face value, there's no obvious mythology there aside from Kal being broody and dark, while his new wife Elena is petite and enjoys gardening.
In saying that though, the book does actually take the basic framework of the myth written in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Much like this version of the story, our lead character Elena (Persephone*) is forced to marry Kal (Hades*) after her own father makes a deal without her involvement or consent. Further, Kal then kidnaps her and brings her to an island (to be fair to him, he has a huge ass house and she can literally have whatever she wants, whenever she wants, which is a selling point I gotta say), just like Hades does to Persephone. And much like the legend of the underworld power couple, she learns to love him overtime, given she has literally no choice. So actually, mythology wise, not bad.
... However.
This book gets a single star purely because it's not marketed as a retelling/reimaging/re-something-or-other, and for that reason I fear people may read this book and somewhat glamourise the relationship depicted. It's incredibly dark (just like the myth) and without acknowledging outright that this is taken from a story the ancient audience reading Ovid would have thought was problematic is ... well, problematic. This book is riddled with a lot of violence and unhealthy power play, and I think by stating the story's roots, it may have made the drama a tad bit more palatable for a wider audience.
It's also a mafia romance book ... I just didn't mention that and I feel like I should.
