Penthos was the ancient Greek personified spirit (daimon) of grief and lamentation. He may have been numbered amongst the Algea (the personification of Sorrows).
This piece for recreated ancient Greek lyre, features the mournful, poignant qualities of the ancient Greek Phyrgian Mode. Misnamed the 'Dorian' mode by scholars in the Middle Ages, this is haunting musical mode formed of of 2 conjoined tetrachords which form the equivalent intervals as D-D on the white notes of the piano, but heard here, in the pristine focus of ancient just intonation, which further enhances the distinctive expressive qualiites of all the ancient musical modes.
The true beauty of creating new music for recreated lyre, is the minimalistic purity of the resulting music. With the maximum of merely 11 string on this particular lyre, endless elegant melodies can be plucked from the air, framed mostly by nothing more than geometrically pure 5ths and 4ths in just intonation, plucked by fingers of the left hand.
This piece, together with a compilation of other mastered audio from this year's YouTube presentations, will feature in my new album scheduled for 1st January, 2023, "Eleusian Mysteries - Mythological Music for Ancient Greek Lyre" - the best things in life are worth waiting for!
