I had the opportunity to attend the Greater Binghamton Airshow 2024 at the Greater Binghamton Airport near Johnson City, New York on July 7th. The standout performances came from the USMC F-35B demo team (VMFAT-501 “Warlords” from Beaufort South Carolina and the US Navy Blue Angels.
I have seen the F-35A Demo Team before but not the B model. It was amazing to watch it hover. The Blue Angels were exciting to watch as well (especially after watching the documentary on Amazon) I was left in awe at the skill it takes to maneuver those planes.
I shot everything on my Sony FS7. I used the Sony 28-135mm F4 and The Tamron 50-400mm. It was my first time using the 50-400 and I loved the ability to get super close to the action but it was hard to keep stable. The 28-135 was my go too lens. It gave me great range and stability.
I brought my tripod hoping to get stable shots with it but it was too restrictive. I also think that my camera rig was too heavy for the tripod. I could not get smooth pans or tilts. I think I’ll have to invest is a heavy duty tripod in the future. I decided after a few attempts to switch to handheld/shoulder rig for the rest of the show. It was tough but I got better shots.
Overall I’m happy with how it turned out and I look forward to future air shows and the content I can create.
