Thunder Bay could not shake winter this year and a month into spring (April 19, 2013) it got hit with one of the biggest snow storms / wind storms it had all year. More than 25cm of snow fell in about 12 hours, winds were gusting up to 70km/h, snow was drifting up over a metre high in places. Schools, Lakehead University, Confederation College, businesses and services across the city were closed by lunch time.

The Police Services warned of such bad driving conditions that they appealed for people to not drive. Whiteout conditions reduced visibility to near zero at times.

CIty buses were pulled from their routes (as were garbage and recycling collection.) Snowplow crews couldn't keep up with the snow and drifting snow. Many area highways were closed. Powerlines covered with snow and ice fell across the city leaving many without power.

Still, Thunder Bay made the best of it. The city's brewery stayed open.
