The Great Divergence is a historical concept that is used to describe Europe's mercurial rise in the 15th century to world dominance, especially over the more populous and wealthy East. When technology is invoked, advances in firearms technology are often pointed to. I would argue that while important, that was not decisive, as the Islamic and Chinese Empires had firearms. Instead, I am going to make the case that naval technology and its role in the death of the Silk Road were what catapulted Europe to the top.
