The U.S. government is restricting certain Chinese technology, including future foreign-made robots and some DJI drone and camera products—but do these bans actually make Americans safer?

At 71, after spending nine days in the hospital, my Roborock robot vacuum and mop became more than a convenient gadget. With 4,000 square feet of tile and wood floors to maintain, it was a genuine lifesaver. Yet future advanced robot vacuums made overseas may face new restrictions because of concerns involving cameras, mapping systems, wireless connections, cybersecurity, and foreign access to data.

I also hoped to upgrade from my DJI Pocket 3 to the DJI Pocket 4 for an upcoming African safari. When that camera was not available through the normal U.S. market, I purchased the Chinese-made Insta360 Luna Ultra instead—and I am very happy with it.

But that raises an obvious question: Why restrict one Chinese-made camera while allowing another with many similar capabilities?

And what about the ultimate surveillance device most of us willingly carry every day—our smartphones? Phones contain cameras, microphones, GPS, location tracking, personal messages, photographs, financial information, and access to nearly every part of our lives. Modern vehicles, security cameras, doorbells, and smart appliances also collect enormous amounts of data, often using components manufactured around the world.

In this video, we examine the reasoning behind Chinese technology restrictions, the privacy and national-security concerns, the effect on American consumers, and whether a more reasonable policy would focus restrictions on military bases, government buildings, hospitals, utilities, and other critical infrastructure.

Should ordinary consumers lose access to useful and affordable products, or should all connected devices—American and foreign—be required to meet the same strict cybersecurity and privacy standards?
