The Golden Grotto Hike in the Sanzhan river gorge is one of the hiking highlights around Hualien, Taiwan.

The hike starts at the confluence of the river and follows the southern arm into the central mountain range and ends at a beautiful waterfall in the Golden Grotto.

The terrain is very hard-going, with loads of slippery boulders to scramble over, overgrown jungle paths as well as narrow ledges in some parts.

The trail crosses the river at many points, to be sure to know what the water level is like before trying this hike out. If there's been any recent rains, give this one a miss as conditions on the river and in the grotto can get dangerous when in flood.

We decided to give the Golden Grotto a go - here's what it looked like...
