Andrei Proshkin's The Golden Empire is a gripping historical epic set against the backdrop of the Mongol empire of the 14th Century.
The year is 1357 and half of Eurasia is occupied by the formidable Mongol state known as the Golden Horde, led by the greedy and murderous Khan Janibek.
When his mother Taidula suddenly loses her sight, Janibek sends his messengers to a far away province to fetch the miracle worker Metropolitan Alexei, threatening to destroy Moscow if he does not agree to help. Alexei concedes, but is unable to work a miracle on Taidula who remains blind. Full of disdain, Khan Janibek casts away the humiliated Alexei, while enslaving Alexei's assistant Fyodor.
But Alexei can't bring himself to leave. He stays in the Horde and joins the caste of 'the doomed' -- the slaves who stoke the huge furnaces under the Khan's bathhouse.
