![3 ‘priceless’ lessons I learned from Verizon Small Business Digital Ready
When Cherlyn Carby was looking for a gentle, all-natural shampoo to treat her 1-year-old daughter’s scalp psoriasis — and couldn’t find such a product on the market — her mom instincts kicked in: If Carby couldn’t find the shampoo, she would make it herself.
That was the beginning of LushUs Kids, the plant-derived hair care company for kids that Carby founded in 2021 in Richmond, Virginia. As a solopreneur, Carby handles all aspects of the business, from creating the product formulas to handling shipping, orders, sales and operations, as well as social media and the company’s website.
“When I started, I was timid,” Carby says. I did not have a mentor [or] anybody to guide me.” The search for resources to grow her small business led to Verizon Small Business Digital Ready. “When I found it, it was a goldmine,” she says.
A vital nugget of advice from Digital Ready, Carby says, was gleaned during a 1:1 competitive analysis live event. “The instructor told me to go into the salons and get feedback,” Carby says. She dropped off LushUs Kids products at a handful of beauty parlors across the country, where stylists gave feedback on the scents, textures and even packaging. “I think that getting the unbiased feedback from beauticians … gives me a good edge,” she says.
Another 1:1 session, this time focused on the LushUs Kids website, led to a complete redesign. “I thought my website was amazing, and they came back with feedback, and they helped me restructure my website in that session,” Carby explains. “They made it easy to read, the flow was better, the checkout faster. Its so priceless.” The result? Online sales increased by 26%, Carby says.
And although Carby describes herself as having lifelong stage fright, she says the social media courses helped her overcome it and become the face of her brand. She now posts frequent tutorials and other videos of herself, and engages directly with her followers. She credits the new strategies from Digital Ready with helping her increase her social media following by 6,000 followers. “I think that customers truly believe in the brand story,” Carby explains. “They truly believe in the person behind the brand.

leadership roles.”
Secrist is one of the most recent schools to become a Verizon Innovative Learning School. What started with just eight schools in four districts in 2014 has grown to 561 schools in 94 districts nationwide, providing a lifetime of change for students and educators. Verizon Innovative Learning Schools are part of Verizon Innovative Learning, the transformative education initiative that began more than a decade ago.
“Having the 1:1 [tablets] in our school helped teachers locate those students who need more support, and provide that support during the lesson, on the spot,” says Ameel Attallah, the Verizon Innovative Learning Coach at Secrist. In this new role, Attallah supports his colleagues and students in adopting new learning styles in the classroom.
With technology that allows students to stay connected at home, as well, Attallah says the students are fully supported whether in class or doing homework on their own. “They can research, they can be creative,” he says. “There’s no limit.”

Art teacher Lourdes Fuller firmly believes art class is a lab. The design cycle, she argues, is very much like the STEM process: You get an idea, draft it out and then step back and redesign. Fuller explains, “The scientific process is that you basically test your hypothesis. In art, youre testing your idea.”
Fuller argues that art and science have much in common: “In order to be any kind of scientist, you have to have a curiosity, and you have to observe the world, and all of that is art.”
In her art classes at Shenandoah Middle School Museums Magnet in Miami, FL, students use technology, including 1-1 devices provided by Verizon Innovative Learning to analyze plants, insects and more, all through the eyes of an artist. “They think they are doing nothing, but they are doing so much,” Fuller says. “They are doing science.”
Fuller’s passion for art extends to the social and emotional growth of students. “The most exciting moment for me is [when] students find and discover something with their eyes,” she says. “The more you see, the more you know and how you fit into the world.”
