Welcome to day four of love notes from the goats! A friend challenged me to do an advent calendar of 25 videos leading up to Christmas. I figured it might be a good way to get back on YouTube after a long break. But to be honest, I don’t really like putting my face or voice in videos. I like it to be all about the goats. And it will be come spring! But for now, this has been kind of a fun way of reflecting on the farm and getting me out of any winter isolation. So, we’ll take it a day at a time and see how things unfold. Thanks to those of you who are along for the ride!
Today was a pretty exciting day! The goats got some animal crackers in the mail from a farm friend! So everybody got a treat. Generally, we don’t give the goats treats beyond grain, hay and minerals, but the holidays call for breaking all the rules. Plus, Abby was in heat today and likely got pregnant! I feel like when hormones are in play, any rules about sweet treats are completely off the table.
I’ll be completely honest I have to talk myself through winter. I’m not a fan and have to find all sorts of ways to remind myself I’m lucky to be alive…even when it’s due to be 4 degrees and windy this week! So today I thought a lot about something a printmaking professor once taught me about trading “I have to” for “I get to” whenever possible. It’s amazing how much this small trick works. I mean it’s still stupid cold out, but I feel a little better about it! ;)
Ps… today was a special exception to my general no treats rule with the goats. It is important, especially for neutered, male goats to avoid a lot of extra sweets. They are prone to the equivalent of kidney stones in humans which can cause real health problems and keeping them on just can really help reduce their chances of ending up sick. Plus, we like to teach the goats not to jump on visitors, and when food is involved, all bets are off!
