Based on these stories I would hazard to say that Pliny the Younger believed spirits served as some sort of prophetic warning. That or in some instances ghosts were the restless spirits of the dead seeking some sort of closure after their death. I'm also not sure about how friendly Pliny's relationship was with Sura, or what sort of person Sura was. Is this a letter between two friends seeking to find a mutual understanding on a subject, or is Pliny employing some bitter sarcasm and dry wit.
