About the concertos:
Pietro Antonio Locatelli was one of the most extraordinary violin virtuosos of the early 18th century. Born in Bergamo and later active in Amsterdam, he was known for his innovative techniques, dramatic expression, and uncompromising artistic vision. While rooted in the rich lineage of Corelli and the Roman school, Locatelli expanded the violin’s possibilities in ways that were unmatched in his time.
His L’Arte del Violino, Op. 3 (published in 1733), is a landmark in the violin repertoire. These concertos combine elegant melodic writing with technically daring “capricci,” often pushing performers to the limits of what was considered playable. In these works, we hear both the refinement of Italian Baroque style and the seeds of the virtuosic concerto tradition that would later blossom in Paganini.
