Australia is a nation shaped by the sea. With more than 36,000 kilometres of coastline, generations of Australians have relied on lighthouses, buoys and navigational beacons to guide ships safely through our coastal waters.

Produced in 1969, The Gathering Flame explores the remarkable work involved in designing, building and maintaining Australia's maritime navigational aids. Travelling from the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland to the remote reefs of Western Australia, the film follows the lighthouse tenders Cape Pillar, Cape Moreton and Cape Don as they service some of Australia's most isolated beacons.

Beautifully photographed by an extraordinary team of cinematographers, including future Academy Award winner Dean Semler and acclaimed Australian cinematographer Don McAlpine, and narrated by famous Australian broadcaster John Laws, the film combines sweeping ocean photography, innovative split-screen sequences and a vibrant late 1960s soundtrack.
