Vinegar Syndrome continue to surprise with their latest VSU release — The Garbage Pail Kids Movie (1987) finally arriving on 4K Ultra HD in a deluxe collector’s package.
This edition comes housed in Vinegar Syndrome’s premium magnetic clasped hard box, with the discs stored in a slimline Amaray featuring a reversible sleeve — giving you the choice between newly commissioned artwork or a variation on the original theatrical design. Inside the box you’ll also find a perfect-bound collector’s booklet packed with new writing on the film, along with stills and behind-the-scenes photos.
The film itself is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, with a Dolby Vision colour grade compatible with HDR10 displays. Picture quality here is excellent — colours are significantly improved, contrast is stronger, and fine detail receives a noticeable boost over previous releases. This is easily the best the film has ever looked, and Vinegar Syndrome once again deliver a transfer that meets their typically high standards.
Extras are equally impressive. The disc carries over the bulk of the archival bonus features from Shout Factory’s 2015 Blu-ray, while adding two brand new interviews and a newly recorded audio commentary, offering fresh perspectives on this infamous 80s oddity.
Some may question whether The Garbage Pail Kids Movie deserves this level of treatment — but for those of us who grew up with it, this is an incredibly welcome upgrade. Love it or loathe it, Vinegar Syndrome have given the film a presentation that’s as polished as it is nostalgic.
