Look. You see what's in front of the guy before he gets hit. There's no cliff. They establish a drop off earlier, sure. But lookit all them trees. Then look at the utter lack of trees when Joe goes flying. Not a single tree. Not along the cliff, not on top of it where they should be standing.

Joe's wife clobbered him SO HARD his body transposed through time and space.
