Later this year, The Frick Collection will move back into the Gilded Age mansion that has been home to one of New York’s most beloved museums since 1935. While the move is eagerly awaited, the Frick’s recent temporary residence in the Breuer building—an icon of Brutalist architecture at 945 Madison Avenue—offered visitors a chance to see its jewel-like collection of paintings and decorative arts with fresh eyes. As the Frick prepares to return to Fifth Avenue, Director Ian Wardropper discusses what he learned about the collection in its home away from home and what we can expect from the expansion and renovation project once completed. As he prepares to hand the baton to a successor, Wardropper also explores how The Frick Collection has changed during his tenure and what the future may hold for the museum.
