A woman who had not left her house in three years walked out of a hospital in five days. Nobody argued with her. Somebody said the right words in the right order.
In 1985 the psychologist Gerald Weeks collected eleven chapters by eleven rival schools of psychotherapy — Viktor Frankl, Milton Erickson, Steve de Shazer and others — under the title Promoting Change Through Paradoxical Therapy. The book's own preface admits that practitioners who mastered these techniques were called therapeutic magicians, because the results were startling and no other word fit.
This is a breakdown of the four instructions that book actually contains: commanding the symptom, blessing the resistance, binding the choice, and forbidding the change.
Each one comes with the exact condition it runs under, a documented case, and a protocol you can test this week. Plus the reason none of it requires you to believe a word of it — and the one failure mode nobody warns you about.
Sources: Gerald R. Weeks (ed.), Promoting Change Through Paradoxical Therapy (1985) · Steven Heller & Terry Lee Steele, Monsters and Magical Sticks (1987), introduced by Robert Anton Wilson.
Paradoxical intention, anticipatory anxiety, hyperintention, symptom prescription,
therapeutic double bind, Ericksonian utilization, strategic therapy, logotherapy,
one-down positioning, and why telling someone to change makes them worse at changing.
