The first novel in the Rougon-Macquart series by Emile Zola. I loved it and highly recommend! I think it is imperative to read this one as it sets up the initial conflict and the host of characters who will be coming in later novels. Don't be intimidated by historical context. If someone with my lack of history learning can read it, so can you!
