One of the earliest instances of a constitutional movement in the Muslim world emerging was Qajar Persia at the turn of the 20th century. Recognising the inability of their leaders to prevent the misery Persia experienced during the 19th century, Persians began clamouring for a body of law that would guarantee their basic rights. This movement evolved into a revolution which would serve as a springboard for the revolutionary activity which gripped the country throughout the 20th century. Old institutions were replaced with new ones, as the power of the Shah was eclipsed by a buoyant Parliament that asserted its dominance on the political scene. Even though the movement was soon suppressed, its impact would come to shape Iranian politics and society ever since.
