The Flash is DC's first major foray into the multiverse, combining elements of time travel and multiple timelines. The film follows Barry Allen, aka The Flash, as he navigates a new reality after going back in time to save his mother. While the multiverse concept allows for the inclusion of beloved characters and fan service, the film's time travel aspect introduces inconsistencies in its rules, which can be frustrating.
Barry Allen, played by Ezra Miller, is portrayed as the self-proclaimed "janitor of the Justice League," focusing on smaller tasks while longing to free his father from prison. Barry discovers his ability to run fast enough to travel through time, and he decides to save his mother. However, this choice has unintended consequences, leading to encounters with alternate versions of himself and a threat from General Zod. The film capitalizes on the rich history of DC characters and provides a nostalgic return for Michael Keaton as Batman.
The use of the multiverse in The Flash allows for interesting character dynamics and mentorship arcs. Both Ben Affleck's Batman and Keaton's Batman guide Barry Allen in different ways, forming emotional connections through shared loss. The film shines when it focuses on character-driven moments and explores Barry's desire to reunite his family. The mentorship between the original and new Barrys is a joy to watch, adding depth to their interactions.
However, the film suffers from a packed storyline that fails to give all its ideas proper development. The inclusion of a love interest for Barry feels rushed and underdeveloped. Additionally, the CGI and special effects, while attempting to showcase Barry's powers, often feel weightless and distractingly artificial. The film's reliance on CGI becomes apparent, especially in action sequences and when integrating characters into scenes they were not originally present in.
The Flash's major flaw lies in its time travel aspect. The film establishes rules but undermines them for the sake of emotional resolutions and a happy ending for the protagonist. This choice detracts from Barry's growth as a character and renders his hero's journey ineffective. The movie tries to immerse the audience in the excitement of the multiverse and fan service but fails to provide a cohesive narrative that supports these elements.
Despite its shortcomings, The Flash offers enjoyable moments, nostalgic returns, and entertaining performances. Ezra Miller impresses with his portrayal of two different versions of Barry Allen, while Michael Keaton's Batman evokes a sense of nostalgia. Director Andy Muschietti's use of horror elements adds a dark undertone to the film, and the screenplay excels in smaller character moments.
However, the film's CGI quality is subpar, especially in crucial action sequences. The visual effects don't live up to the potential of Flash's powers, dragging down the overall experience. The storyline also slows down in the second half and becomes repetitive, and some predictable plot points and collisions with other Marvel films diminish the impact.
