Falling Joy' is a reflective EP from South African Indie-Alternative Rock project The Fismits, rooted in songwriter and producer Mark Biagio’s early 1990s university years in Durban and his formative musical partnership with Bruce Barrett. The songs originate from that period, written for their band The Mind Theatre, and have lived on quietly for decades in memory, in live sets, and in fragments across earlier releases.
Rather than a nostalgic exercise, 'Falling Joy' is a deliberate act of reinterpretation. Recorded in 2024 and 2025, the EP sees Biagio revisiting these songs with the perspective of time, reshaping them through the lens of The Fismits stripped back, emotionally direct sound. Tracks like 'When', 'Scars' and 'Independence' balance urgency and restraint, while 'Too Small A Word' moves into darker, more introspective territory.
The EP title is taken from a lyric in another Barrett composition, 'My Friend', and reflects both the warmth and weight of revisiting the past. It suggests a sense of joy that arrives while something else quietly falls away. 'Falling Joy' is not about reclaiming youth, but about acknowledging it, honouring the songs, and finally letting them rest.
