In January 1942, Japanese forces were advancing into the Netherlands East Indies, aiming to seize the oil port of Balikpapan on Borneo and secure one of the most valuable fuel sources in the region. Dutch defenders had already prepared demolitions, Allied aircraft and submarines were trying to slow the invasion, and a Japanese convoy was moving toward the harbour under escort.
With heavier Allied ships unavailable or forced back by damage and mechanical trouble, four old American destroyers under Commander Paul H. Talbot were sent through the night toward Balikpapan in a raid which turned into one of the first Allied surface attacks of the Pacific War.
