This is the land before the city. Before the towers, before the ports, before the name "Victoria." For thousands of years, it has been, and remains, the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Lekwungen peoples.
The Lekwungen, or $lək̓ʷəŋən$, are a Coast Salish people. Their name for this land is not a title, but a description. It means "The Place to Smoke Herring". This name defines the land by its purpose, by its abundance, and by the sacred relationship between the people and the resources that have sustained them since time immemorial.
