What if the first New Testament was created by someone later condemned as a heretic?
In this episode of MythVision Podcast, Derek Lambert sits down with Dr. M. David Litwa to explore the controversial history of Marcion, Marcion’s Bible, and the origins of the Christian New Testament.
According to Litwa, Marcion’s publication from the 140s represents the earliest attested New Testament we have. His collection consisted of a Gospel, a collection of Paul’s letters known as the Apostolikon, and an introduction called the Antithesis.
The discussion explores a provocative possibility: the basic structure of the New Testament — Gospel plus Apostle — may have originated with Marcion before the later Catholic canon expanded it into the collection of books Christians know today.
They also examine the Muratorian Fragment, the dating of 2 Peter and 3 John, the development of Luke, the relationship between Luke and Marcion’s Gospel, the dating of Acts, and Richard Pervo’s arguments concerning Acts and the Pauline letters.
