On 1 November 1943, American Marines landed at Cape Torokina on Bougainville to secure a beachhead from which airfields could be built against the Japanese base at Rabaul. As transports and support ships worked inside Empress Augusta Bay, a Japanese surface force under Rear Admiral Sentaro Omori sortied from Rabaul to strike the anchorage and disrupt the landing. Moving to block that approach was Rear Admiral Aaron S. Merrill’s Task Force 39, four light cruisers and eight destroyers, which turned north into the dark waters off Bougainville for a night engagement...
