The FGC says it wants more grudge matches, bigger money matches and the energy of the old Marvel days.
But people seem to have a problem when a competitor recognizes that his participation has value.
The conversation around FaultyThing asking for a $2,000 appearance fee to play BarBar exposes a bigger contradiction in fighting game culture.
Players are expected to spend money traveling, build their brands, create memorable moments and accept that those moments may become content for years afterward. Meanwhile, money already moves throughout the ecosystem surrounding those matches through broadcasts, sponsors, creators, side bets and promotion.
This isn’t about whether FaultyThing is worth exactly $2,000.
That’s for the people involved to negotiate.
It’s about whether competitors are allowed to understand the value they help create.
I also look at the history of FGC money matches, old-school Marvel, Sanford vs. Duc, and what happened after my own match with SonicFox became content that people are still making videos about more than a decade later.
The match ends. The value of the match doesn’t.
