What if Final Fantasy VI was turned into a tactical RPG? I take a look at one of the coolest Final Fantasy ROM hacks I’ve come across, Final Fantasy VI Tactics, which completely reimagines the classic game using the gameplay and battle system of Final Fantasy Tactics.
I break down how this hack transforms FFVI’s characters into tactical RPG units, including Terra, Edgar, Sabin, Shadow, Cyan, Locke, Celes, and Strago, while giving them abilities that actually fit their personalities and original roles. From Edgar’s machines to Sabin’s Blitz techniques and Locke’s Steal abilities, there are some seriously clever ideas here.
I also talk about the tactical job system, JP abilities, equipment, magic, and the ways this hack changes the original Final Fantasy Tactics formula to make it feel like a completely different Final Fantasy VI experience. And yes, playing through the opening sections of FFVI this way is every bit as strange and fascinating as it sounds.
By the end of this video, you’ll see why Final Fantasy VI Tactics is such a fascinating fan project and why I would absolutely love to see more classic Final Fantasy games experimented with in this way.
