The fashionable thinkers judge ideas based on popularity - what sounds good, what looks good, and what's socially acceptable.
I've also noticed that they tend to have more relativist philosophies - even to the point of accepting intellectual inconsistency. They tend to be more OK with lying and promiscuity. They tend to be more "artistic" and drawn to the avant-garde. And yes, they tend to align more closely with the political left.
