The relationship between Isle Royale National Park's wolves and moose is one of the longest running predator-prey studies in the world. It started back in 1958 and has been running continuously ever since. What researchers have found is fascinating: that, not only do Isle Royale's wolves have a direct influence on Isle Royale's moose, but they have a direct impact on it's vegetation as well. Isle Royale's wolves are helping to keep an entire ecosystem in check, simply by doing what comes naturally to them: being a predator.
These findings are just a few of the many which have come to build support for the Green World Hypothesis, an ecological theory that champions the role of predators in ecosystems.
And in a world where predators and wild places continue to disappear, National Parks and protected areas are some of the last places we can see these predators in their natural habitats, influencing ecosystems we know they are vital to maintaining.
