Many commentators dismiss paleo-libertarianism primarily because it would supposedly be weak on immigration.
But does that claim survive contact with reality?
In this video, I examine the argument from the standpoint of empirical history itself. Has the West moved closer to Rothbard's vision over the last several decades, or further away from it? If immigration has become a crisis, are those outcomes really attributable to laissez-faire principles, or to the deliberate policies of states and the individuals who run them?
Along the way, I discuss:
• Methodological individualism and empirical analysis
• Rothbard, List, and Austrian economics
• Ellis Island and market-driven migration
• The Irish famine and state intervention
• Modern immigration policy in Britain
• False dilemmas and double standards in political debate
If libertarianism is supposedly "weak on immigration", then compared to what? The actual policies we live under today deserve at least as much scrutiny as the hypothetical failures of a freer society.
