I got early hands-on time with The Expanse: Osiris Reborn closed beta, and in this video I’m breaking down my full early impressions of Owlcat Games’ new sci-fi action RPG set in the universe of The Expanse. If you’re looking for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn gameplay, closed beta impressions, overview, preview, and whether this game is actually shaping up to be good, this video covers it.
We go over the game’s third-person cover-based shooter combat, the tactical pause / slowdown system, the companion mechanics, the twin protagonist concept, and how much the RPG side of the game is already showing through. I also talk about the skill tree, abilities, itemization, crafting potential, exploration rewards, hacking, character origins, and where the beta left me impressed versus where I think the game still needs work.
Owlcat is best known for RPGs like Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, so part of the big question here is how well the studio translates its RPG strengths into a more action-heavy format. Based on this early beta, I came away positive on the setting, characters, banter, build potential, and overall narrative feel, but less sold on the combat than I hoped to be.
For fans of The Expanse TV series and novels, this is an original story set within the timeline of the first three seasons, with familiar elements from the universe but its own characters and locations. The beta is live now, and the full game is currently planned for 2027 on PC, Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, PlayStation, and Xbox, with Game Pass day one. Closed beta access comes through the Miller’s Pack or Collector’s Edition.
