In this video series, I present you with Rome's predecessors: the Etruscans. While relatively little is known about the Etruscans when compared to a culture like that of the Romans, still enough is known about them to permit us a glimpse into their daily lives. To create this video series required a great deal of research in books, articles, papers, videos, images, some Etruscan texts and extant remains of towns and tombs.
In this video we take a closer look at Etruscan burial practices and some of their beliefs about the afterlife. Much of what you will see in my depiction of the underworld comes from a deep analysis of the progression of tomb paintings found throughout Etruria. Instead of showing the bright and relatively peaceful underworld as we see in the earliest tomb paintings, I opted for a middle-ground approach to show the influence of the Greeks on the Etruscan beliefs about the underworld. I did this to better reflect the reality of the tomb paintings one can easily see by visiting in person or searching online. These paintings depict a shift towards a darker underworld now inhabited by some questionable and some downright monstrous figures. I hope you find this video useful in providing your students with more context for their Latin/Roman studies. Valete!
