Solomon Belete was born in Ethiopia in 1936. A graduate of his country's National Defense Academy, he also earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in geography at Halle Selassie University in Addis Ababa. His military career saw him rise to the post of Commandant, Ethiopian Marine Corps. He later served as the director of security for Ethiopian Airlines.
In June 1977, he and his wife escaped from the Communist regime that controls their country by walking through a desert to neighboring Djibouti. With the help of former U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia E. Ross Adair (a former Congressman from Indiana), the Belete family entered the United States in 1980. They reside in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
As part of his efforts to end the Communist tyranny that has engulfed his native land, Solomon Belete founded the Ethiopian Peoples Democratic Alliance.
