Can Lebanon finally end Hezbollah's domination and force it to disarm? For over 40 years, the Islamist group has been one of the most powerful forces in the country. Backed by Iran, it emerged during the Lebanese Civil War as a militia fighting Israel, but has since grown into a so-called “state within a state”. Entrenched in Lebanon’s politics and regional conflicts, it has clashed with Israel and intervened in the Syrian Civil War. But given the recent assassination of its leader Hassan Nasrallah, heavy Israeli strikes, the fall of Assad’s regime in Syria, and Iran’s own military setbacks, Hezbollah has been significantly weakened, with the Beirut government now openly demanding its disarmament.
Could this mark a turning point for Lebanon? Disarming Hezbollah could restore state sovereignty, strengthen fragile institutions, unlock international aid, and reduce the risk of another devastating war with Israel. But the risks are equally stark. Hezbollah still commands major support, especially among Lebanon’s Shia community, and Tehran views it as vital to its regional strategy. This video explores Hezbollah’s rise, its current challenges, and whether Lebanon can finally defang the group without plunging the country back into conflict.
