Emperor Antoninus has a secret. He may be the merciless leader of the Roman Empire, but his humanity takes him underground (literally), breaking the very rules of a society he was born to uphold. In a time when slavery is the norm and Jewish culture is forced to remain hidden, Emperors and Rabbis should certainly not be friends.
Using cardboard and clay, this stop-motion animation brings new life to the secret relationship between the ruthless Emperor Antoninus and the wise Rabbi Judah the Prince. This brotherhood carries our protagonists from young inexperienced leaders, through a lifetime of questions, to elderly best friends.
The film, created through Studio G-dcast by Melissa Nierman and Dani Bronstein, aims to represent the ancient Jewish effort to maintain a covert but thriving culture within the oppressive Roman statehood.
