Many years before the Hundred Year war, the Earthbenders and the Air Nomads were actually very close. Many young Earthbenders were fascinated by the spritual nature of the Airbenders and wanted to visit their their temples. So the story begins with a young boy named Ema. Ema was born in the Earth kingdom, and was loved deeply by his family in a small remote Earth village. Despite being from a proud Earth kingdom family, Ema was always interested in the teachings of the Air Nomads at the temples far from home…
Things took a horrid turn for the worst when a huge tsunami engulfed Ema’s village, and swallowed up his entire family and home. The boy was left with absolutely nothing and nowhere to turn to… Thankfully for him, a group of Air Nomads travelled to the area after the Tsunami and took in the boy, before being taken to the Southern Air Temple. From that point onwards, he was raised as one of their own.
Now of course he wasn’t actually an airbender, but he was still treated equally and given a staff and full monk’s robes… Because of this, Ema was forced to engineer inventions that allowed him to mimic airbending abilities and fly like the rest of his new family. This worked tremendously, and he actually became one of the most effective Air Nomad peacekeepers at the southern temple.
The kindness of the Air Nomads taught ema that even if one struggled in life, there was always hope. He channeled that hope into his inventions, and was able to compete with the top airbenders at the temple.
